All of my mountain loving clients love the highlands and Quetzaltenango or ‘Xela’ (Shay-la) as it’s known locally.  Located at 2.330 meters or 7,640 feet, the altitude keeps the climate cool year round.  Walk the cobblestone streets and learn the rich history of this capital of the highland Maya people.

Have fun hiking up to Laguna Chicabal and get an amazing view of the active Santa Maria volcano which erupts almost daily with big smoke plumes.  After hiking, check out the nearby town of Zunil, which is famous for their outdoor hot springs.  You’ll love staying in the historic inns and trying the variety of local restaurants the city holds.
